Headaches Q&A

Why do I get headaches?

The most likely reason you get headaches is stress, which causes muscle tension in your head and neck. You can also get a headache if you’re sick with a cold or fever, have a sinus infection, don’t drink enough (causing dehydration), or hit your head.

In all these cases, the headaches disappear when you address the cause and/or use over-the-counter medication. However, it’s not clear what triggers some of the most severe headaches, so treatment is more challenging.

What severe headaches might affect me?

Of the many types of headaches, migraines and cluster headaches are the most common severe types. A cluster headache causes intense pain in and/or around your eye. Pain attacks (clusters) sometimes last several weeks or months, followed by a remission period.

Migraines are the most well-known severe headaches. The pain tends to originate in one side of your head and can be extreme. Migraines cause a range of other symptoms, too, including:

  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Light and sound sensitivity
  • Weakness
  • Dizziness or lightheadedness
  • Visual disturbances

Some people experience an aura — seeing flashing lights or wavy lines before and sometimes during a migraine attack.

Migraines can strike at any time, but they often have triggers like red wine, caffeine, and severe stress that make them more likely to develop. Some people go years between migraines, but they’re a frequent and disabling problem for others.

What treatments can relieve my headaches?

You can eliminate headaches with clear causes like stress, dehydration, or infection by treating the problem. For example, drinking more water, using relaxation techniques to reduce stress, and taking medication to treat an illness.

You’ll likely need specialized treatment at Premier Pain Consultants if you suffer from severe or recurring headaches. Several medications can help with migraines and other severe headaches.

Some drugs help to reduce the headache’s frequency; others prevent the pain from becoming extreme. It’s also vital to identify your migraine triggers so you can avoid them. The best way to do this is to keep a diary of everything you do, eat, and drink to help isolate your triggers.

Advanced migraine and headache treatments include peripheral nerve block injections and ketamine infusions.
